We Perform Upper Endoscopies in Atlanta, GA
What Is an Upper Endoscopy?
Why Do Healthcare Providers Perform Upper Endoscopies?
If you visit any of our offices in Northwest Atlanta with digestive concerns, you may be recommended an upper endoscopy. We perform this procedure for anyone experiencing abdominal pain, regular nausea and vomiting, swallowing problems, unexplained weight loss, or even loss of appetite. An upper GI endoscopy gives us a direct view of your gastrointestinal system and allows us to take biopsies if needed. It is a more accurate tool than X-rays alone for diagnosing GI problems.
What is the Upper Endoscopy Procedure?
In a way, the upper endoscopy procedure begins before you arrive at our office. You must complete upper endoscopy prep at home. This entails consuming only clear liquids for six to eight hours before your appointment and discontinuing some medicines as instructed. Our highly trained specialists will start your upper endoscopy appointment by administering a sedative to ensure that your are comfortable during the procedure. We then insert an endoscope, which is a narrow, flexible tube with a light and small video camera, through your mouth. We gently slide it down your throat and into your esophagus, stomach, and upper intestine. Meanwhile, we will pump air through it so that we can see your organs better. During the process, our doctor will use a video monitor to closely examine any problems or perform treatments if necessary. We may also remove tissue for biopsy. The entire process should take no more than 15 minutes, and you will be able to go home immediately after we are done.
