How Does the Bravo Capsule Work?

Bravo pH is an endoscopically placed monitor that measures the pH or acid level of the esophagus. You will undergo an upper endoscopy while under sedation. During the procedure, if there is significant inflammation or damage found in the esophagus, the physician will not proceed with capsule placement. However, if the lining of the esophagus appears normal, a catheter will be inserted into your esophagus, and the pH capsule will be temporarily attached to the lining of the esophagus. Once placed, our doctors can determine if the patient suffers from typical or atypical acid reflux symptoms. It can also be used to monitor how well the acid-suppressing medication is managing acid reflux. This innovative monitoring system allows our team to compile important data about the pH level of the patient's esophagus and create a treatment plan customized specifically for their needs.

What Is Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux, also known as heartburn, affects nearly 1-in-5 people in the United States. While it is more common in males, it can also occur in women and children. Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid makes its way up to the esophagus, the organ connecting the throat to the stomach. This may damage the esophagus's sensitive lining and lead to a number of health issues, including chest pain and cancer, if left untreated. While there is no known cause for acid reflux, doctors believe the rise in obesity throughout the country is a contributing factor. If you suffer from acid reflux, then contact our doctor today to learn more.

How Do I Know If I Need the Bravo Capsule Test?

The Bravo pH monitoring system is most often used for patients experiencing nausea, chest pain, regurgitation, and heartburn. Patients may also qualify if they cannot manage the symptoms of acid reflux with their current prescription medication. At GI Specialists of Georgia, our experts will work alongside you to help make the best decision for the future of your gastrointestinal health.

Using the Bravo pH Test

The Bravo pH test relies on you to provide pivotal information about the severity of your acid reflux symptoms. This capsule measures the esophagus’s pH level and transmits the data wirelessly to a portable receiver you keep near you. The test period lasts about 48 hours. You will also be given a diary to record when you’re experiencing acid reflux symptoms, including coughing, heartburn, and regurgitation. Throughout this time, you will be able to go about your routine. Your doctor will explain exactly how to get the best results from your Bravo receiver. DO NOT get the receiver wet as it may cause it to malfunction. However, you must keep it close to you at all times so you can accurately assess your symptoms. Take care to press the appropriate buttons every time a symptom occurs, when you’re either eating or lying down. After the test is complete, you return the diary and the receiver to your physician.
