What Is an Endoscopy?
An upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy, also known as an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), is a medical procedure that allows a gastroenterologist to examine the upper part of the digestive system visually. It involves the use of a flexible, thin tube called an endoscope, which has a light and a camera attached to it.
Upper endoscopy is commonly performed to diagnose and treat various conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, inflammation, strictures, and tumors. It can help identify the cause of symptoms like persistent heartburn, difficulty swallowing, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, and gastrointestinal bleeding.
In addition to visual examination, an upper GI endoscopy allows the gastroenterologist to take biopsies (small tissue samples) for further analysis, remove polyps or foreign objects, and perform specific therapeutic interventions like dilating strictures or stopping bleeding.
What Happens During a GI Endoscopy?
During a GI endoscopy, also known as gastrointestinal endoscopy, a thin, flexible tube called an endoscope is used to examine the digestive tract.
